America is in recession, but that doesn’t stop some people from throwing public money around like it was made of leaves and snow. Prof. Bonnie Nardi of the University of California Irvinehas been givena $100,000 grant from the National Science Foundation to essentially playWorld of Warcraftin the name of research. Apparently it’s soimportantto study how Americans playWorld of Warcraftthat all this money has exchanged hands. Nardi wants to know why American players go to greater lengths to mod the game than Chinese ones....

Maybe this shouldn’t be such a big surprise, considering that just about every household seems to have a PlayStation 2 lurking in their entertainment center. The fact that you can still find a lot of outstanding games to play on it (for next to nothing) surely makes the console attractive to the average consumer. I love me some Hori products, and this latest accessory for the PS3 Slim looks great. It’s a screen that they call the Hori LCD Monitor HD 3. It kind of houses the Slim, and it adds a 1366×768 resolution, 11.6″ LCD screen to the unit, complete with built-in speakers (and headphone jack). That means that you’ll get a solid 720p out of the unit. When you’re done, fold the screen down for a compact, desktop gaming unit....

Sony Online Entertainment’s free-to-play PC MMOFree Realmsis still coming to PlayStation 3, according to the publisher. I playedFree Realmsvery briefly, but was easily distracted by things like instant messenger, email, Google Reader, and work. I’ll probably have better luck on the PS3, where my only distraction will be notifications of people coming online that I never game with. Is a free-to-play MMO on the PS3 something you’re interested in? That whole “free” thing has got to help, eh?...

As hard as it is to believe, the PSP may not be quite as bad as some of us make it out to be. Sure, there’s not many good games for the system. Granted, it uses the UMD, which is the grandchild of Betamax. And yes, you need a PlayStation 3 to (legally) play PSOne games on your PSP. But hey, people are still buying it! The ever-popularRobot Unicorn Attackis finally making its way to Android devices tomorrow, and it will herald the eventual availability of a dedicated Adult Swim App, which is planned for May. Robot Unicornis a “runner” style game, originally available for free online. It gained a cult following due to its ludicrous premise, and the backing music, which hilariously happens to be Erasure’s “Always.” There are Metal and Christmas spin-offs, and they’ll come to Android if the original sells well enough....

The latest title update forRock Band 3has gone live on Xbox 360, and with it aresome exciting changesand additions. PlayStation 3 users, you’ll get the update within 24 hours, according to Harmonix.
