Epic Games has to look pretty far ahead as far as game tech goes. Not only are they busy game devs, with games likeGears of War 3andBulletstormcoming, but they’re also the creators of the heavily used Unreal Engine, which is now going into version 4. Epic’s president, Mike Capps, is kind of nervous about what the next console generation could bring. The problem is that he doesn’t know what’s coming yet.

“Looking at the next generation, it’s really murky compared to last time,” he told Edge magazine. “I’m sure you’ve heard just as many rumours about when it’s going to happen and they all get overturned every year.”

Ha! We’re in the same boat as gamers. Kind of. We don’t have a popular game tech’s success riding on it or anything. “Three more months, I always think, until I’m going to know for sure what the platform is – and I think I could find you an e-mail from three years ago saying just that.

Capps also said that he thinks that the next generation jump is going to be a big one, and that devs are not going to want to make a massive investment themselves. He hopes that they’ll come to Epic instead. “That’s our hope, to be ahead of the game.”
