Yes, I’ve been away from Destructoid for a while, but after seeing everyone at PAX, it seemed like the natrual thing to do would be to start posting again. Hence: The Mushroom Singdom. For the last couple of months, I’ve been doing singing Virtual Console reviews. Simple? Yes, except when you consider that I wake up at 9am (Nintendo releases the games at 9am PST on the dot), download the games, capture some video of me playing them, and then hole up in my room for two hours and write the songs.

The trick to writing lots of songs quickly is finding the “hook”, the focal point around which the song will be built. For instance, takeLandstalker: The Treasures of King Nole.I came up with the (totally inane) line “Landstalker/Stalkin’ the land”, which somehow made me think ofJudas Priest’s“Breaking The Law”. Once I got that, the rest of the song was easy. Or considerAdventure Island.Master Higgins’ skateboard riding made me think of the song “Greased Lightning” fromGrease, and then it was just a simple matter of adapting that song to my purposes.

Now, here’s the other thing about writing 3 songs in 2 hours every single week: 20% are going to be crap, about 70% will be mediocre, and if I’m lucky, there will be 10% that’re just plain awesome. This rule seems to hold pretty true. Let me know what you think.
