A stereotypical view of Japan is that of a culture in which new and quirky technology is embraced. However, there’sanotherstereotypical view in which the Japanese support homegrown products over filthy roundeye devilry. Whichever stereotype is at play here depends on whether you think Move is innovative, or a “me-too” copycat.

The borderline-racist opening paragraph is a fancy way of saying that PlayStation Move is outselling Microsoft’s Kinect in Japan, but a considerable amount. Figures put the peripheral at a 2:1 advantage, as the Xbox 360 fails yet again to gain much traction in the birthplace of Sony and Nintendo. Move cleared 170,000 sales, while Kinect pulled in 90,000.

Interestingly, both peripherals were trumped by Torne, a DVR add-on for the PS3. It’s suddenly become the best-selling peripheral of the year with 784,000 sales already.

As far as Move vs. Kinect goes, Japan seems to be the exception. Elsewhere, Kinect is being named thefastest selling electronic in history, and generally seems to be beating everything else. In fact, Sony isstillrefusing to release sales datafor Move in the US, leading us to reasonably speculate that it compares embarrassingly to Kinect.
