Gaijin Games: Moving to a Different Beat

Arguably, there are three major elements to aBIT.TRIPgame: classical gameplay elements evoking an earlier era of games, retro-inspired graphics that embody and celebrate constraints, and the music. Whenever I begin to describe a game likeBIT.TRIP BeatorCore, I always have to mention how cool the music plays in the game. TheBIT.TRIPgames, after all, are just as much a rhythm/music game as they are a re-imagined take onPongorIkarugaor whatever. So I wanted to ask the guys of Gaijin Games, when they make a game where music plays such an integral role in their games, how they go about making it work....

InSeaman, the player feeds and cares for a mutant half man/half fish creature through all his various stages of evolution. It’s really more of a virtual pet simulator than an actual game; there’s no ultimate goal, there are no tasks to be completed, and the only enjoyment one can derive from the title comes from the weirdness and wonderment that results when a virtual mutant creature directly mocks your age, profession, and social situation before throwing his own poop at you....

For the same reason you shouldn’t go into a pet store to look at puppies or kittens unless you are A) completely broke or B) particularly strong-willed, I would recommend avoiding Blizzard’s new pictures for the upcomingWorld of Warcraftpets. That’s not to say there’s anything wrong with paying for digital critters. I mean, heck, they’re donatingsome of the proceeds to a “good cause” again.
