If you’re in the mood for early access to some of 2011’s hottest games, then today’s your lucky day; not only was theBattlefield 3beta announced for September 29th, but Blizzard has revealed that theDiablo IIIclosed beta is available, right now! WithDiablo IIIstill to be confirmed for release in 2011, this could be the closest players get to Blizzard’s long-awaited sequel. A statement released by the developer today says, players will be able to go through half of the first act of the game as any of the five announced classes....

Oh the irony! A man wanted on drug charges fell prey an addiction of his own — tracked down by cops thanks to his obsession withWorld of Warcraft. Alfred Hightower of Howard County, Indiana fled to Canada to avoid the rap for his drug dealing ways, only to be tracked down in Azeroth. Detective Matt Robertson had learned of Hightower’sWoWaddiction after gathering information from a childhood friend of the dealer. He subpoenaed Activision Blizzard for more details, and was able to receive the tools he needed to track Hightower down....

We’ve been looking forward to spending more quality time with this portable prequel to theSilent Hillseries, and we recently had a chance to get lost in our favorite freaky town at the E for All Expo. A big concern has always been that the immersive world ofSilent Hillhas been crammed down into portable game, but I’m glad to say that most of my worries have been lost in the fog; the full experience fits nicely on the PSP....

At theirpress conferenceearlier today, Sony unveiled the new 80GB PlayStation 3 “Core Pack”. This latest model will have the same features as the 40GB PS3s, but with double the harddrive space and will retail for $400, the same price that the 40GB models are right now. The 40GB models are now on their last legs and will soon be taken off the market, joining the 20GB and 60GB in the console graveyard....

Here are some shots from Sega’s upcoming Japanese mafia simulator,Yakuza 2. Dragon tattoo bearing Kazuma Kiryu, the protagonist of the previous game, will be making a return appearance. This time, instead of only having an accurate representation of Tokyo to tromp around, parts of Osaka will also be open for Kazuma to explore. Touting a new and improved combat system, Sega specifically mentions the ability to string together combos to effectively take out large groups of enemies....

The days of the printed instruction manual may be numbered. EA Sports has joined the likes of Ubisoft in ditching printed manuals altogether, the publisher has confirmed. The change started with the release ofFight Night Champion, which shipped only with a slip containing an online pass code (and aCrysis 2ad on the flipside), along with small warranty pamphlet. A complete digital manual can be found on the game disc by selecting “Manual” from the game’s main menu....

Yesterday,we ran a rumorabout the possibility of EA message board bans leading to in-game bans. According to the same person who started the rumor,Command & Conquercommunity manager Aaron Kaufman, this isn’t true. Ina recent topic startedby Kaufman in theC&Csection of the boards, he admitted that he misspoke and that no action other than a message board ban will be given to unruly members. From the posting: If we suspend or ban you from the forums, that does not affect your in-game account and certainly it does not impact your in-game account for other games....

Wired’s Game|Life blog haswordthat MTV, EA and Harmonix plan to announce the newest title from the creators ofGuitar Herovia a Monday morning teleconference. Epic Games has to look pretty far ahead as far as game tech goes. Not only are they busy game devs, with games likeGears of War 3andBulletstormcoming, but they’re also the creators of the heavily used Unreal Engine, which is now going into version 4. Epic’s president, Mike Capps, is kind of nervous about what the next console generation could bring. The problem is that he doesn’t know what’s coming yet....
