Destructoid review: Golden Axe: Beast Rider

I’m an action game obsessive and nothing gets me going more than a solid, brainless, gory hack n’ slash. Part of the blame for this love of action can be traced back to the good old days of the scrolling brawler, a genre to whichGolden Axeonce proudly belonged. One of the most famous brawlers ever,Golden Axewas a huge arcade and Mega Drive hit, widely popular amongst kids for its violence and simple co-op formula....

Dtoid (the show) week 6: Donkey Kong Returns TO THE RAVE

We up and done did another 3 episodes of the Destructoid (the show). We started off the week weird and low key with an episode from the future, and by Friday, we had slowly lost our minds with aSesame Street-inspired dance party. The better the videogame news got throughout the week, the more happy we got, culminating in a DONKEY KONG COUNTRY RETURNS ZOMG jammy jam of epic (if not short lived) proportions....

E3 09: Ozzy Osbourne in Brutal Legend is news to someone

As revealed duringEA’s press conferenceyesterday,Brutal Legendis getting another rock icon added to its already impressive roster of stars. Joining Lemmy, Lita Ford, Rob Halford, and Jack Black in providing voice work for the game is none other than the Prince of Darkness himself, Ozzy Osbourne. While it would have admittedly been cooler to see the cameo while playingBrutal Legendwith no prior knowledge of its existence, this is the Internet, after all....

E3 09: Undead Knights is Pikmin with zombies

Of the games Tecmo was displaying at its E3 booth, one of the most intriguing looking titles wasUndead Knights. I’d heard absolutely nothing about this PSP game before the show rolled around, but now that I’ve seen it played and been talked through the title’s features, I must say that it’s looking like one of the coolest PSP games to have hit the system in a long, long time. If you enjoyed titles likePikminandOverlord, as well as the movieArmy of Darkness, then hit the jump for a first look at Undead Knights....

E3 09: WET hands-on impressions

Although Joseph may not like the title ofWET,his articledid you give the basics of what the title is about. How does the title look and play, though, is what’s important. The demo had three different levels to play through: A beginning tutorial style level which ran you through some of the basic moves and introduced you to the character’s intro storyline, the Rage Mode level, and a high-speed car hopping shoot-em-up level....

E3 10: Power Gig: Rise of the SixString enters the stage

Power Gig: Rise of the SixStringis a coming at a very difficult time. With a launch date for October, the three-piece band music game, while containing some interesting ideas, will be facing the awesome wrath ofRock Band 3and the nextGuitar Hero. It’s especially difficult considering their main selling point, a guitar controller that can be a real stringed guitar as well as a game device, has been superseded by Harmonix and their offerings....

Final Fantasy III iPhone will be a DS port, but better

We guessed right. The upcoming iPhone version ofFinal Fantasy IIIwill be a reworking of the DS game. That means polygons over sprites, and those polygons are coming right from the 2006 DS release. Here’s the kicker, though: The iPhone version could look better than the DS version. Square Enix is reworking the visuals for high resolution, says Famitsu. According toAndriasang, one of the testers says that the sound is also of a very high quality....

Free App of the Day: Blood Hunter

Today’s free pick isn’t the most engrossing of games, but it does feature Pumpkin Bats, which pretty much grants it an 11/10 on my personal scale. Blood Huntersends waves of monsters at you and charges you with the task of shooting them by simply touching them on the screen. You have different weapons and abilities that unlock during the course of the game, but other than that, there’s no much else....

Free App of the Day: Save Toshi

I have a rather wonderful App for you, today. Even if you don’t dig the legitimately decent physics-based puzzles, the questionable Engrish voice acting will keep you hooked. Save Toshi(iOS) is about a Japanese pop star who, for some reason, has forgotten how to walk. Your job is to get her to the dance floor by shooting various blocks and maneuvering the catatonic caterwauler around the environment. It’s a pretty simple concept that takes a little bit from the best physics puzzlers on the market and makes something quite charming indeed....
