Today I had the privilege of attending a GDC talk by Yoshio Sakamoto of Nintendo*, who is perhaps most famous for his work on theMetroidseries. He divulged many of the secrets behind his history as a producer and gamemaker, including quite a few about the upcomingMetroid: Other M. The most interesting one? While developing the control scheme, there was one thing he was unwilling to budge on: he wanted Samus to “move along a rail”....

Midway has announced that it has “kwietly” slipped theMortal Kombat: Kollectionfor the PlayStation 2 to retail stores today. The three game pack includesMortal Kombat: Deception,Mortal Kombat: Armageddon, andMortal Kombat: Shaolin Monks, all for $29.99. I won’t try to defend the quality ofArmageddonandDeception— either you like ’em or you don’t — butShaolin Monksis definitely worth a look. Particularly if you have a friend (you do have a friend, right?), the cooperative fighter/beat-em-up isn’t perfect, but it’s some bloody, sloppy fun....

MTV Multiplayer continues one of their most popular features, and todayhas announced the resultsof their“Greatest Aquatic Animal in the History of Video Games”search. Multiplayer’s Tracey John had asked me to participate as a judge, and I could have had a tougher job. The world ofaquatic animals in gaming is great and complicated, from the Bloopers fromSuper Mario Bros.to the Finny theFish of Finny the Fish & the Seven Waters“fame.” Ultimately, the spirit and influence of Destructoid’s dolphin-loving Chad Concelmo forced the hands of the judges, and Sega’s Ecco the Dolphin emerged as an overwhelming favorite....

So far EA has done a fairly good job of generating hype for the upcomingNeed for Speedsequel, and for good reason, it looks like a solid entry to the franchise following in step withHot Pursuit’s return to prominence. Need for Speed: The Runisn’t due out until mid-November, but in the meantime they’ve popped out a new gameplay trailer and a batch of screens to whet your appetite.

Kirby’s Epic Yarnis going to be great, but not even yarn can top a classic styleKirbyadventure! Thankfully, Nintendo is making a new one and this one looks crazy. On top of the fact that you’ll be controlling multiple Kirbys at once, there seems to be some stylus controls in the same style asKirby’s Canvas Curse. There’s also a newPokemongame in store, but this is going to be more along the lines ofTyping of the Dead....

Oh, and yes, I am planning to compile the storybook episodes into a book once season one ends....

Pokemon BlackandWhiteis set for release in Japan on September 21st. Early reports state that the game has already achieved +1 million pre-orders. The game obviously doesn’t need much in the way of hype to sell itself, but it’s getting hyped anyway. The Pokemania seen in this video borders on insane. The Ash cosplay in the video below is particularly… expressive. Still, I admire his spunk. I wish he had been at PAX....
