Free App of the Day: Retron X (iOS)

Retron Xis a bit likeSpace Invades, except you move traps to capture the baddies who are sliding down the screen. So in essence, it’s not likeSpace Invadersall that much. What a waste of an intro. What you have to do is match the colored traps with correspondingly colored bad guys. It’s pretty simple, and if you play on Easy you’ll find it quite boring. Switching the game to “Tuff” difficulty, however, gives you more traps, more colors, and a far more compelling experience....

Friday Night Fights: “MY HAND IS A DOLPHIN!” edition

Its Friday, and I’m getting down on Friday. Even thought I don’t need a bowl of cereal, and I am pretty decisive about which seat I prefer sitting in (answer: the back), I can’t help but be entranced by the Rebecca Black phenomenon. It’s crazy how a simplesongcan become so viral, hitting 45 million views last I checked. As for the origin of this post’s header image and title, you need look no further than this dubbed version of the videohere....

Game endorsements we never want to see

“Merchandising, merchandising, where the real money from the movie is made.Spaceballs: The T-shirt,Spaceballs: The Coloring Book,Spaceballs: The Lunch Box,Spaceballs: the Breakfast Cereal,Spaceballs: the Flame Thrower.” – Yogurt. I have to agree with that famous movie quote fromSpaceballs: The Movie. Merchandising is where the money is made, but how far is too far when it comes to attaching a name to a product? Some people think that there are some products that shouldn’t bear the name of their favorite video game series or mascot....

GDC 10: Control Inspiration

Daniel Benmergui madeToday I Die. Messhof made allthis stuff. When these indies talk about game design, you’re able to probably bet they’ve got something interesting to say. Both designers organized an IGS talk entitled, “Control Inspiration” which, according to the official proposal, is about “their design processes, and why Jesus didn’t tap.” Essen opened by talking about his own personal history of game design – he started out making clones ofJoustandCrystal Questbefore moving onto more abstract games likeBoolandBooloid....

Golgoth remaking gorgeous arcade monkey-shmup Toki

Up until yesterday, if you were to ask me about monkeys in videogames, I’d start off withDonkey Kongand then mentionSuper Monkey Ball,Samba de Amigo, and maybe those enemies in the Green Hill Zone inSonic the Hedgehog. I never would have thought of Toki, the titular character of Tun Corporation’s 1989 run and gun platformer, because I’d never heard of his game untilGolgoth Studiosdecided to remake it for Xbox Live Arcade and Games for Windows....

HAHAHA: Ubisoft cancels We Dare in United Kingdom

It gets worse and worse! First, Ubisoft releasedan embarrassing trailerfor a sex-themed Wii game rated ages 12+. Next, it declared that the gamewould not release in the United States, and tried to distance itself from the game, before brushing offthe age rating. Now, it’s pulled the bloody thing from the UK. For a game calledWe Dare, it is ironic that Ubisoft seems to be chickening out. Now scheduled for — I guess — variousbits and piecesof Europe, the “spicy” Wii/PS3 party game looks like it’s being quietly snuck out under cover of darkness....

Here are your Metro 2033 PC specs

Ah, PC gaming, so complicated and treacherous. THQ has released the minimum, recommended and optimum specifications for the PC version ofMetro 2033, the promising post-apocalyptic survival shooter that would be quite good provided they fix the ammo situation. The game has a lot of promise. A great atmosphere, interesting premise, and potentially great focus on survival as opposed to all-out combat. There are just a few aggravating issues,as my preview points out, getting in the way of all the fun....
