Games of the week for 10/18/09: Something edition

This is a very special edition of Games of the week, as this episode, for one week only, it will be rushed! That’s right, you’ll be getting all the thrill of your regular games of the week section, but even more slapdash and last-minute than usual. This is what happens when your humble editor has been too busy stuffing his fat face with cake instead of doing his damn job. Like it matters anyway, nobody reads this bit....

Gaming’s Guilty Pleasures: In-Game item collecting

[Editor’s note: Sure, the time stamp says May, but it’s still April. I’m not going to let the date prevent me from promoting one of my favorite reads from April’s Monthly Musing topic. Read on as Ashley Davis talks about In-Game item collecting. — CTZ] Many people enjoy the normal, everyday hobby of collecting things. I am certainly one of those people. GDC 10: Theme is Not Meaning

Soren Johnson spent five years working on theCivilizationseries for Firaxis, eventually landing the job of lead designer forCivilization IV. He also did work onSpore, amongst many other things. He also gave the keynote address of the 2010 Serious Games Summit. Johnson’s talk, “Theme is Not Meaning,” opened with a simple question: who decides the meaning of a game? The designer, or the player? Hit the jump for the answer to that question, and a summary of Johnson’s keynote....

Genocide for fun and profit: horrific irony in Army of Two

In myArmy of Tworeview, I promised to talk in greater detail about the game’s moral and political implications. That’s what I’m fixin’ to do right now, with somemild spoilerage. Army of Twomay be one of the most contemporary games I’ve ever played: rather than shying away from contemporary politicsasCall of Duty 4did,Ao2unflinchingly references 9/11, Blackwater, and the Iraq War through its rather underwhelming storyline.Call of Duty 4had a wonderful storyline which said nothing about the modern world;Army of Twodoes exactly the opposite....

Get your Nintendo (and non-Nintendo) fan art here

Fan art alert! Artist Zac Gorman has aweb page dedicated just to Nintendo fan art, and it’s pretty incredible. His animated comics are particularly stunning. As his style is a little on the cartoony side, you might expect his work to have a more lighthearted bent, but there’ plenty of heavy drama here, peppered with some autobiographical and editorial stuff too. For instance, Mr Gorman doesn’t seem too impressed Nintendo’srecent redesign of Pit fromKid Icarus, and when it comes to theWii U, he’s more excitedby the idea of a newEarthboundgame than a new controller....

GoW 2 producer thinks the Xbox 360 is reaching its potential

In an interview withGamasutra,Gears of Warfranchise senior producer Rod Fergusson suggested that the Xbox 360 is reaching its technological potential with heavyweight titles such asToo HumanandSmash Court Tennis 3eagerly occupying store shelves. Kidding aside, Fergusson maintained that even though the Xbox 360 has a technological ceiling, he sees “room to grow” for titles in the future. …I think we’re certainly approaching the upper end of [the Xbox 360 technological potential] as far as what developers are able to do with it, but just looking at all the demos we saw today — ours and others — it’s clear that all the games just keep improving, and keep pushing that bar....

Hands-on: inFAMOUS 2 ups the ante

I don’t follow sports, but I know there’s some kind of most improved award that they give players. From what I’ve seen so far, the gaming equivalent of this award would have to go toinFAMOUS 2. I thoroughly enjoyed the first game, but it needed some polish and attention. Judging from what I saw at a press event last night, Sucker Punch went above and beyond forinFamous 2. This is how you do sequels, folks....

Heavy Rain walthrough video has an ugly child in it

Sony has released a brand new video from Quantic Dream, revealing a brand new scene fromHeavy Rain. “Father and Son” details the life of one main character who has recently lost his wife in a car accident. From the looks of the video, he must also cope with the inherent ugliness of his dead-eyed child, who resembles a creepy little child of the corn. The game is looking pretty damn amazing, and as a huge fan of Quantic Dream’s earlier work, I can’t wait to try it out....

Indie Nation #54: Strange Adventures in Infinite Space

Time for another Indie Nation, wherein we highlight a kickass independently-made game that may be worth your time. What with all my endless bitching about games thatwastethe player’stime, now seems as good a moment as ever to talk about Digital Eel’s indie classic,Strange Adventures in Infinite Space. Proudly allowing players to “explore the galaxy in 20 minutes or less,” as the game’s official page proudly exclaims,SAISis noteworthy in that it takes entire epic, nonlinear space exploration/RPG experiences that could easily last over forty hours and condenses them into digestable, replayable, satisfying 20-minute rounds....
