Play Eye of Judgement, no PS3 necessary

The all-seeingPS3 card battling titleEye of Judgementuses the included PlayStation Eye camera to recognize cards and bring amazing animations to the palm of your hand. It’s a novel idea and a nerdy delight, but what happens when the power goes out? No worries, Tyler Tinsley has you covered with his tabletop adaption ofEye of Judgement. Tinsley wanted to see if he could take the on-screen action ofEye of Judgementand roll it backwards to a table top trading card game....

Playing With Others: Silence is golden

[Editor’s note: Tubatic talks about not talking in multiplayer games for hisPlaying With Otherspiece. — CTZ] I’m the guy that likes to play multiplayer without voice chat. You know, its not that I don’t like people. People are cool. I really do enjoy getting to know people in general. But for the most part, I don’t want to participate in headset banter. In some circles, one might label me a jerk....

Preview: Apache: Air Assault

Apache: Air Assaultis a special beast. While it might be considered a helicopter version of Gaijin Entertainment’sIL-2 Sturmovik: Birds of Prey, a military aerial simulator released in 2009, it is clearly a different approach to aerial combat entirely. Helicopters offer a whole bundle of dynamic options over jet planes and dog fighting, so there has to be a little special attention placed upon the game before it launches November 16....

Preview: Rock Band 2 (Wii)

Rock Bandis the epitome of a “casual game” — it’s a title that fosters drunken get-togethers where you and your friends/family can embarrass yourselves and have lots of fun doing it. The Wii is the most popular current-generation videogame console, so I’m sure many soccer moms were elated when Harmonix announced that they were bringing the game to Nintendo’s best-selling machine. Unfortunately, the Wii version ofRock Bandwas what gamers would call “gimped”: it was essentially a port of the stripped-down PS2 version, so most of what made the HD console versions so appealing was missing....

Primary Wii gamer is male, under 25

Wait, how is this right? We keep hearing how older people and girls are loving the Nintendo Wii and thatdamned bowling game that isn’t really any fun at all. Oh, sorry. It seems that these non-traditional gamers are playing the Wii, but it’s still the under-25 male that’s spending the most time with his Wii. GameDailystuck the researchers atFrank N. Magid Associateson the task, and they found that the Wii gamer isn’t as different from the norm as some were thinking....

PS3 rumble lawsuit returns from the grave

I’m sure you all rememberImmersion, the parasites who sat on patents for rumble technology and then sued any company that dared use them. It led to the famously arrogant “Rumble is a last-gen feature” remark from Sony, before the company went crawling back to Immersion and settled a deal to create the DualShock 3. Rumble returned to the PS3, and it was all water under the bridge …or was it?...

PS3: It only does custom Firmware (against Sony’s wishes)

Following the news that the PS3 hadbeen hackedand that the keys to the kingdom were thrown to the proletariat, it has now been announced that you can now install your own custom Firmware. Something tells us Sony’s not going to be fond of this. A tech ninja known as KaKaRoTo has released tools allowing you to create custom Firmware via Linux. Right now you’re able to’t do a lot with it, but in the future you should be able to run Homebrew applications without trouble....

Remedy paranoid about Alan Wake spoilers

Alan Wakehas all the makings of an incredible plot-driven game, and Remedy knows it. In fact, the studio is so keen on people enjoyingAlan Wake‘s story that it’s gone a little paranoid in its desire to keep us completely free of spoilers, planning to make sure the 360 exclusive’s ending remains a secret. “I think we’re going to be insanely careful about how much of the story we reveal,”explainsRemedy Entertainment managing director Matias Myllyrinne....

Resistance 2 getting a Leviathan sized patch, Stalker will be able to move

One of my favorite things aboutResistance 2’scooperative campaign is the Stalker’s immobility. I’m an experience point whore and I like them when they come cheap and easy. The mammoth metal spider looks nasty, but it lacks the ability to turn around.BlindsideDorkand I like to position our dudes behind the machine and pummel away at its health and collect the experience candy when it finally pops. This Monday, that will no longer be possible....

RetRose Tinted: Campaign ’84

If that isn’t the most boring image ever posted to this site, I’d be astounded. Well, folks, Election Day is finally upon us here in the United States. I could think of no better way to celebrate (other than by voting which, if you have yet to do, stop reading this right now and go do so) than by playing a retro game about campaigning for the presidency. Luckily, I have just the very thing inCampaign ’84for the ColecoVision....

Review: Fruit Ninja

While a game in which you beat the crap out of fruits could be taken as a thinly veiled piece of homophobic propaganda, I am going to give Halfbrick the benefit of the doubt. After all, who truly likes fruit? Sitting there, so full of citrus, acting like it owns the place. Fruit has had an easy ride for far too long, and it’s high time we did something about it....

RISK: Factions has a cool visual style going for it

In my mind, EA and Stainless Games are doing a good thing by making sureRISK: Factionsisn’t a simple, soulless translation of a board game like all too many Xbox LIVE Arcade titles are. With a playablecat faction, and the type of art you would never associate with Risk, they are certainly on the right path. And the great thing is, you don’t have to enjoy these fresh additions. As wehave since learned, the classic board game will be fully integrated, as will the Risk 2008 ruleset, if you’re into that sort of thing....
