School shooting in Germany linked to videogames

A school shooting that took place in Germany yesterday is alreadybeing linked to videogames, with politicians in the typically game-unfriendly country pointing fingers at violent media exposure. Tim Kretschmer dressed himself in black commando garb and opened fire at random at the Albertville-Realschule school in South Germany, killing nine pupils and three teachers, before fleeing the scene. He would later shoot another person near a psychiatric hospital, before hijacking a car and forcing the driver to take him to the nearby town of Wendlingen....

Sony is gaining ground and slamming the Wii

Bloomberg is reporting that the sales of the PlayStation 3 are quickly gaining ground on the Xbox 360. Unfortunately for Sony, the fight is only to see who can win the crown of second place. The Wii has had an unrelenting death grip on first for a good time now. According to Sony’s chief executive officer Howard Stringer, it doesn’t matter where the Wii is, in fact, he doesn’t even consider it as a force to be reckoned with:...

Spectator games: When watching is more fun than playing

As we all know, the one thing that sets videogames apart from other forms of media is interactivity. Being the catalyst for your own adventure is something that makes gaming more interesting to me than any movie or book. With videogames, one can stop being a mere passive observer and actually be a part of the action. That said, if there’s one thing I may have done more than playing videogames, it’s watching videogames....

Splatterhouse: First image and details revealed

I hate1UPright now, sitting on top of all that deliciousSplatterhouseinfo and slowly distributing scraps to the masses like capricious Roman emperors from on high. Ah, screw it, I will take whatever I can get. The above image is Rick’s new in-game look for the Xbox 360/PS3 resurrection ofSplatterhouse. It’s a slight departure from the more blatant Voorhees rip-off, especially the Hulk Hogan arms, but I can dig it. It has a hyper-real look that should hopefully mean we’ve got some ridiculously over-the-top, cartoony gore to look forward to....

Star Ocean The Last Hope: International trailer for PS3

The new and improved international version ofStar Ocean: The Last Hopeis headed to the PS3 next year. Square Enix wants you to be happy about it all fitting on one Blu-ray disc, which I guess I am. This version has both Japanese and English voices, and subtitles for English, French, Italian, German, Spanish and Japanese, making it, well…international. There’s also two different menu styles to pick from in-game. The main feature, of course, is that it can be played in your PS3....

Ten Minute Taste: Grand Theft Auto: Chinatown Wars (PSP)

Wondering how Rockstar’sGrand Theft Auto: Chinatown Warslooks and plays on the PlayStation Portable? We’ve pulled the first ten minutes of the game (loading screens and all!) for you to check out, so wonder no more. The game itself is handled pretty well on the PSP, the transition from the Nintendo DS mostly seamless. The impact of one of the game’s early uses of the touch screen in the original — tapping a pane of glass with your stylus to crack it — is lessened on the PSP, however....

TGS 2007: Halo 3’s ‘Forge,’ or how I learned start loving Master Chief

I have a confession to make: I’m not a hugeHalofan. Don’t misunderstand, though — I’m not a hater. The games Bungie has created have single-handedly shaped the landscape of console first-person shooters, and they deserve all of their success. But as someone who has never been competitive in FPS titles (and also not easily impressed by all of this sci-fi narrative malarkey), the titles have never really stuck with me....

The Daily Hotness: The very last 2008 recap

As amazing as technology is, it’s pretty scary just how easily screwed up they can get. I do find it funny that Apple fanboys are coming from all over to bash the Zune when the iPods have such a large failure rate themselves. Now if you’ll excuse me, I’m going to go listen to my Walkman. Capcom is partying it up in Vegas next week,LittleBigPlanetis glitching up,Eagle Eyewas a horrible movie, and more happened today on the last day of the year....

The Memory Card .79: Inside the worm

“The Memory Card” is a seasonal feature that dissects and honors some of the most artistic, innovative, and memorable videogame moments of all time. As a huge fan of old school videogames (SNES 4 LIFE!), I love when I play a recent release that reminds me of a retro game. Usually this whiff of nostalgia’s sweet scent comes from playing a new game in a series that has been around forever (e....
