RetRose Tinted: Wizards and Warriors III

I heard an interesting thing the other day on a podcast (which one it was escapes me now) about how different our perceptions of games are in a span of only twenty years. The distilled point they were making was that, when we were younger, we would believe that a game was exceptionally difficult when it was probably just poorly designed. As someone who takes time weekly to re-evaluate games for which my opinion of are based mostly on distant memories, it resonated with me and I’ve been turning it over in my head ever since....

Review: Comic Jumper

It seems that few developers, independent or otherwise, can create endearing and memorable original characters and properties for videogames. So when Austin, Texas-based Twisted Pixel Games seemingly came out of nowhere with its imaginative downloadable adventureThe Mawin 2009, I took notice. When it hit it out of the park less than a year later with the refreshingly unconventional‘Splosion Man, I knew my initial instincts were right: Twisted Pixel is a developer to keep a close eye on....

Review: Sakura Wars: So Long, My Love

Let’s face it: old games rarely withstand retrospective criticism. Many of today’s classic titles and pioneers would be found nigh-unplayable by future generations of gamers, spoiled in part by modern titles that have learned from those same pioneers, bringing new twists and innovations with every iteration. Thus, it would be fair to assume thatSakura Wars: So Long, My Love, a title that is — to Japanese players at least — nowfive yearsyoung, would compare, well, unfairlyagainst the games of today....

Rocksteady: ‘excited’ about future Batman possibilities

Rocksteady Studios doesn’t seem opposed to the idea of crafting a follow-up toBatman: Arkham Asylum. Go figure, right? Speaking toOfficial PlayStation Magazine, studio co-owner and co-founder Sefton Hill expanded the company response to the question we’ve been asking since finishing the latestBatmanvideogame: will there be a sequel? “I’m not really allowed to comment on that,” he said in the latest issue of the magazine (spotted byGoonline), “but there are definitely lots of exciting stories to tell inBatman’sworld, and I can say that we’re really privileged to work on it, and excited about future possibilities....

Rumor: PlayStation Network redesign in the test phase

According to the latest gossip, Sony is “quietly testing” a redesigned PlayStation Network, with a new aesthetic that will borrow the “image-driven” layout employed by Xbox Live and Steam. The PlayStation Store will have an IMDB-esque database to make searching for games and movies easier. There will also be a new “Deals of the week” section. The reports claim that the old blue design of the store will be totally scrapped in favor of “ultra bright colors on a black background....

Sam’s Club Solid Snake statue to be auctioned

Snake! Snake? Snaaaaaaaakkkkkkkkkkkeeeeeeeeeeeeeee! Oh, wait. He’s not real. But the Sam’s Club one-of-a-kind Old Snake statue looks pretty real, and the best part is that you could possibly own this fine piece of realism. Well, if they wanted to achieve the ultimate in realism, they would need to change hisOcto-camo suit color to better blend in with 200 lb bags of rice and massive (and pointless) stainless steel BBQ grills. Those warehouse store jokes never get old!...

Scraps: Atari’s making some moves today (7/12/08)

Nick Chester is truly evil. When I woke up this morning, I found that he had cut his initials onto my hands multiple times, making any sort of writing work extremely difficult. Not only that, he left a picture of Dale, tied and beaten, with the caption, “No Podtoid-san for you!” Why do you do this, Nick? I said I’d write the column for you this week, and I’ve been doing it!...
