New survey puts Xbox 360 failure rate at 42%

Microsoft truly does give the word “unacceptable” an all new layer of meaning. Despite the company’s endless assertion that the “Red Ring of Death” problem is all but eradicated on Xbox 360, evidence nevertheless continues to prove MS wrong. A new survey demonstrates that the 360 is still a big box of fail, with current expiration rates standing at 42%. The poll quizzed 500,000 people, which is a pretty notable sample size....

New Xbox Experience preview invites going out on October 29

The bad news is not everyone will be able to get in on the preview; a lot of you will have to wait until November 19. The good news is that if you were accepted, you might be hearing about it as early as October 29. Unfortunately, only a few thousand were chosen, but keep holding on to hope; worrying will give you wrinkles. I’ve been playing around with the New Xbox Experience for about a week now, and October 29 is also the day I can start yapping about it....

Ninjatown screens: More ninja and towns than you can handle!

Ninja and towns! Towns and ninja! Oh it’s almosttoo much to bear, isn’t it? Well bear it you must, as we have ten new screens of this sickeningly adorable DS game for you to vomit over. This Shawnimals spin-off isn’t one I’ve been particularly following, but I can say with all certainty that these are definitely the cutest renditions of highly trained and efficient murderers I have sever seen. Now if only they could blend the cute look of Shawn Smith’s ninja designs with a more brutal and darkTenchu-like stealth killer sim, and I think we’ll be onto a game of the year contender....

Nintendogs blamed for vicious dog attack

Videogames have often been accused of inspiring children to rape, rob and murder, but I think this is the first time a game’s been blamed for making adogturn violent. A nine-year-old girl has had part of her lip torn off by a crazed canine, and the girl’s grandmother lays the blame atNintendogs‘ feet. Somehow, this is not a joke. Megan Walker has turned on her DS to playNintendogs, but when the virtual dog barked, her friend’s bull-mastiff responded to the sound by attacking her....

No More Heroes 2 launch vid > Mass Effect 2 launch vid

As hypnotic as Naomi’s fresh pair of implants may be, that video isn’t what this post is about. For the realNo More Heroes 2launch trailer, you’ll have to hit the jump (due to NSFW language). Now, I know it’s an apples-vs.-oranges scenario to compareMass Effect 2toNo More Heroes 2, but I couldn’t help but do it. Both titles are coming out on the same day, and I see it as a battle of philosophies on game design....

Oh look, a trailer for Knights Contract

Namco Bandai has unleashed a new cinematic trailer for upcoming hack n’ slash rompKnights Contract. I have no idea when this publisher decided it would do loads of cool games, but I’m not complaining.Knights Contractlooks exactly like my kind of thing, so I say bring it on. The trailer features really ugly monsters getting cut up by a guy whose sword is also a scythe. There’s also a woman with magical powers who is helping him out....

Original Metal Gear Solid too ugly for HD collection

In a recent interview, Kojipro creative producer Yoshikazu Matsuhana explained whyMetal Gear Solidwon’t be appearing on the recently announcedMetal Gear SolidHD collection. According to him, the game’s polygon count is far too low and an HD reissue won’t mean very much. “Metal Gear Solid 1was for the PSone,” he said. “It has a very, very low polygon count. While at the time the game was something new and refreshing, just bringing it as is into HD probably wouldn’t have that much meaning to us....

Other Worlds Than These: Hyrule in Zelda: Ocarina of Time

[It’s time for anotherMonthly Musing— the monthly community blog theme that provides readers with a chance to get their articles and discussions printed on the frontpage. — CTZ] I’ve been playing videogames for quite a long time. At first, it was nothing more than getting a game, beating said game, and then moving on to the next one. As I grew to understand and appreciate games as more than just things to pass the time, I started to pay attention to the storylines, the universes, and the backstories that were presented to me....

Just because the holidays draw near that doesn’t mean the weirdDante’s Inferno-relatedcrapI’ve beengetting in the mailis slowing down! Nope, today a horrifying ornament —as seen on the Internet!— arrived. Wrapped in a white, blood-stained box adorned with a black bow, the ornament looks like it would be a terrifying addition to any holiday tree. It depicts a body stretched and twisted around dirty sticks and pine cones, all of it hanging from a bloody hook that’s attached to a piece of “human skin....

Parents group asks Best Buy to move M-rated games higher

I don’t ever feel the need to pick up a game box and read the back. But everyone else does, including kids. It seems that the advocacy group Parents Television Council doesn’t want kids to be able to reach Mature-rated games, and they’re asking retailer Best Buy to move them to a higher shelf. According to theConsumerist, the PTC feels that the low placement of M-rated games is a Joe Camel move, putting the filthy, evil games right alongside the kiddie ones....
