University of Central Florida developing abstinence game

It’s a little weird to write a story that contains the terms, “Fox News,” “videogame” and “sex” yet isn’t actually negative. Well, not in the traditional sense, anyway. Fox News Orlando reports that the University of Central Florida is hard at work developing a videogame geared towards female middle school students intended to teach them skills for handling peer pressure relating to sex. The game places them in social situations and they make choices and score points for demonstrating appropriate responses to offers of sexual activity and innuendo from onscreen avatars....

Venetica trailer starts with ‘In a world …’

Yesterday, the ever-alluring Colette Bennettshared with younews of a new PC/360 RPG,Venetica. With only a press release and a few bad screenshots to go off, anticipation hasn’t been high, but maybe this new trailer will see a few converts. Probably not, but we’ll see.Personally, I dig it. It has a veryFable/Beyond Good & Evilartistic quality that might be lacking in graphical oomph, but is part of this (hopefully continuing) trend of games bringing some color back into consoles, so I approve....

Videogames meet real life with Rooster Teeth’s new series

Rooster Teeth is famous for their Red vs. Blue series and various other Machinima shows. The boys are now dabbling with real life stuff in their new show called “Immersion.” Basically, it’s Myth Busters but with a videogame spin to it. This week bringsR-Type III: The Third Lightning(SNES, 800 points),Xevious(NES, 500 points), andMotoRoader(TurboGrafx16, 600 points). That’s right, two more side-scrolling shooters and anotherTurboGrafxgame you’ve probably never heard of. Now don’t get me wrong — the side-scrolling shooter genre has been languishing for years, and it’s always a treat to have the opportunity to play a classic....

Vote in Backlog Series 14: Wanna B UR Fantasy

Time again to vote in a new game forBacklog. If my calculations are correct, we’re just finishing upSplatterhousenow and I’ve put together a list of titles that you can join me in playing for our next run. The theme this time is one of fantasy, which is nowhere near my preferred setting. But that doesn’t mean that I’m just going to pass up a good game just because it has dungeons and/or dragons in it....

TheHomepublic beta starts later this month, even though the full version should have been out by now. If you want to know how people were chosen to participate in the long-delayed PS3 feature, then let Sonyexplain it to you. “We had a couple of plans on how that was going to be done,” said a Sony rep on thecompany’s forum.“Both were broadly based on the concept of loyalty.” That is quite cryptic, and our very own Joe Burling believes that you had to log in to MetaCritic and giveGears of War 2a low scorein order to be considered....

2K’s Chris Kline: ‘Why BioShock should have failed’

BioShockaccomplished a lot in the year 2007, garnering praise and high scores from countless print and online sources. So when 2K’s Chris Kline mentioned in his GDC session in Paris that the game should have failed, it surely sent a quizzical expression across many faces (as it probably is doing to many of you reading this now). Why should this amazing game have failed? InGamasutra’s articleon the topic, Kline’s point is expanded upon as he revisits where the concept for the game started (inspiration fromSystem Shock 2was major), how the focus on the title evolved from functioning in a fully interacting world to one that engages the player directly, and the concept of selling a “sequel” to an unsuccessful game, which was cleverly addressed:...
