Electronic Arts to co-publish Mercenaries 2, maintains PS3 only status

Electronic Arts and Pandemic Studios have announced a worldwide co-publishing deal for the upcoming PlayStation 3 title,Mercenaries 2: World in Flames. For about a year now, Pandemic had been quietly skirting the issue of who would be publishing the title, with many assuming they would remain withLucasArts(who had published the mildly successful first title,Mercenaries: Playground of Destruction). The press release (which can be read after the jump) only mentions the PlayStation 3 version of the game, but rumors have long stated the game would hit theXbox360 as well....

Final Fantasy XIII update and story details

I won’t lie. I wet my pants for Square. Always have, always will.Chrono Triggerpretty much enrolled me for life. Yeah, sometimes they make games that I think we could have done without (coughFinalFantasyX2cough), but in the long run I know I can expect their games to have engaging stories, amazing characters and great gameplay. Oh, and boys that look like girls. It’s like PG 13 porn for the David Bowie set....

First screenshot of unannounced PC shooter looks pretty

Polish developer Flying Wild Hog is working on a yet to be announced PC-exclusive shooter that doesn’t have a name yet. It does, however, have a screenshot to tease you with. The game appears to be set in aPrey 2-like universe filled with promotions for clones that work for you while you have fun elsewhere, robotics, and optical things — implants perhaps? There’s also some kind of cyborg creature sitting in the middle of the street, judging the player for reaching the screencap key....

Free App of the Day: Lame Castle: Be My Valentine

Valentine’s Day was yesterday, but some mobile developers just like to keep love alive.Lame Castle: Be My Valentine(iOS) is free today, because timeliness means nothing when there are freebies to nab. Be My Valentine is a selection of love-themed spin-off levels based upon the originalLame Castle. It’s as fun as the main game, which is well worth the buck it takes to obtain. I highly recommend both the free spin-off and the paid one, so get ’em both, says I!...

Game SERIES Debate to the Death!Smash Bros VS Mario Party

Last week‘s debate made me pretty nervous. On paper, comparing a cartoony and speedy shooter to a realistic and slow stealth shooting game made perfect sense. But this wasMetal Gear— could any series compare with it in a debate? With the possibility of an impending total landslide on my mind, I put the debate up anyways, and I’m really glad I did. The feedback from both sides was a pleasure to read, and the votes did both classics justice....

Gamefly victorious over United States Postal Service

Two years ago, GameFly filed a dispute with the US Postal Service, saying that the mail carrier was providing preferential treatment to big companies Netflix and Blockbuster. The central issue is the sorting of mail from the services which was being hand-sorted at no charge for the big boys while GameFly was left to either pay a surcharge or see more of their discs destroyed by the machinery. This week, the Postal Regulatory Commission handed down a ruling which concurs with Gamefly’s claim and orders the establishment of new mail categories for first-class DVD mailers....

GDC 08: Storytelling in BioShock

Ken Levine is kind of a badass. He not only worked as the creative force behind one of the most incredible games of all time*, but the dude knows how to give an interesting presentation. In “Storytelling inBioShock: Empowering Players to Care About Your Stupid Story,” Ken acknowledged many ofBioShock‘s flaws, and his own personal behavior as a designer that caused his employees to get really, really pissed at him. This all came in between numerous cultural references and jokes with the F-word in them....
