Molyneux can’t ‘think of anything’ exciting coming in 2009

Every time Peter Molyneux opens his mouth, I wince. It’s not that I don’t like the guy. I love him in that non-kissing, less passionate way. The wince is because I know he’ll end up saying something that he doesn’t necessarily mean. Molyneux recently spoke to theBBC(viaGI) about 2008’s best games and the problems facing the industry in 2009. He praised titles likeGrand Theft Auto IVandLittleBigPlanetbefore cutting to one of those rib-tickling statements about the economic issues facing the industry and how he isn’t excited by anything in 2009....

Molyneux wishes the sun’s ‘rays were a little less harsh in the early sunset’

Game development is a labor of love. I’m almost sure of it. Developers and executives sit around in white-walled rooms for years, talking about concepts, themes, and design. And once that game flies out of production facilities and into consumers’ hands, I’m sure there’s a deep sense of pride involved. Yet, what does an executive like Peter Molyneux think about after a game (Fable 2,in this case) goes gold? I wish we had two more bones in the top lip of each character so their mouths could form the words a little bit better....

Molyneux: Kinect will spawn new controllers

Microsoft Game Studios boss and hyperbole master Peter Molyneux has warned against writing Kinect off so early. Despite it looking like a game that will do little more than on-rails shooters and dancing games, everybody’s favorite hype merchant claims it will create whole new types of gameplay. “Everything changes when you change the controls, and that’s what’s happening now with Kinect,” Molyneux tellsWordmagazine. “It’s like going from driving a car to driving a plane … once we as designers have had time to play around with it, then whole new genres of games will come from that....

Mr. Rogers vs Donkey Kong: Mark of the Millenium 1983

I grew up with Fred Rogers. He was as much an institution in my household asSesame Street,Thundercats,Transformersand all those other series that have been strip-mined clean of their original value by psuedo-comedians whose stock in trade is capitalizing on the hazy memories of a generation caked in bong resin and the glamour of recreational heroin abuse. To watch him in the above clip, in which he comes face to face with Miyamoto’sDonkey Kong, brings back a flood of memories from a happier, more innocent time, but it also fills my mind with questions:...

My Halloween costume for 2009

[Editor’s Sonic9jct made himself a Mr. Destructoid helmet for Halloween. Awesome! — CTZ] The idea for this baby came to me about a month ago for whatever reason. Probably thatDante’s Inferno$200 video. Anyway, built this completely out of cardboard and painted it with a glossy acrylic paint so it would have a nice smooth and shiny sheen. Last year, I was Carl and my friend was Lenny and at a party, I was the Black Jackal (or Blackal) from ScrewAttack’s Life in a Game....

Hello, my fellow ninja. I am such a ninja that, even though you allthinkthis announcement is late, I actually declared the winners weeks ago. You just weren’t quite ninja enough to find the post. Yeah … that ought to work. Anyway, to celebrateN+on the DS, I challenged you all to show your ninja skills and prove to me that you deserved to win a copy of the game and a DS Lite....

New Destructoid Episode: Now with 100% less Max Scoville

Well, for today at least. Anthony Carboni joined me in the studio today to talk about the latest and greatest in video game news and discuss our mutual dislike of that unreasonably tall man who sometimes co-hosts the show with me. Just kidding, we miss you Max! Come back soon! Anyway, it’s July 4th weekend, so obviously some sales are in order. BothSteamandEAhave a ton of their games on discount right now, in addition to all of [adult swim]’siOS games....

What’s better than a ninja cutting enemies down in size with an assortment of weapons and blood spewing all over the place? Nothing, actually.Ninja Gaiden IIis out this week and is easily my number one pick. Check out ourreview of the gameif you’re wondering about how it is.There’s also plenty of movie tie-in games out this week. Among them isThe Bourne Conspiracygame, which is really awesome. New screens from XBLA racer Hydro Thunder Hurricane

These screens make my loins vibrate. Boost!Boost harder! I’m not sure if there’s any shaky crotch attachments for the newest game in the Hydro Thunder franchise, but I know it looks pretty good from these new screens. The game also has a slalom-style “Ring Master” mode that has you…well, clearing rings on a course. Gauntlet mode is a time trial on courses peppered with explosive barrels, as shown above. Of course, the real meat of the game is going to be multiplayer action with your friends, with full Leaderboard support....

New Splatterhouse screens have got some red on them

Namco Bandai has unleashed a new batch of screenshots forSplatterhouse. The retro revival’s had quite the troubled development, but these new screens look like they’re taking the right direction. All you need is a nutcase in a skull mask and plenty of enemies to mindlessly smack around, and it appears that’s what the game delivers. I’m certainly not expecting a masterpiece, especially with the game having been shunted from one set of devs to the next, but hopefully it will be a decent brawler....

New stuffy, highbrow Record of Agarest War trailer

I lied. This one is horny and shameless. The upcoming PlayStation 3and now Xbox 360game Record of Agarest War wouldn’t necessarily be classified as a horny game, but you wouldn’t know it from this trailer. Bravo, I say. You do have to be careful when promoting a game like this, though. There’s a fine line between doing the tongue-in-cheek thing and just looking brainless and juvenile. I think the audience for this game already knows what’s up, and is expecting a RPG/dating sim from Japan....

Nintendo shares soar in this pre-holiday period

I chatted with several people at E for All, and one of the discussions that came up frequently is Nintendo’s stock price. I agreed with almost everyone that we missed out buying when the buying was good (our guess was the pre-DS lite era), and now we’re really regretting it. There’s no doubt that this holiday season is going to be a huge one for Nintendo, and their stock prices definitely reflect that....

Nintendo slips up; Pokemon Diamond & Pearl release date announced prematurely?

Due to a slip-up (presumably), it seemsVideogames Bloggerhas managed to grab a screenshot of a premature announcement on the Pokémon Web site, regarding the release date ofPokémon Diamond&Pokémon Pearlin the U.S. Nintendo announced this specific April 22 release date before they wanted to, because it was only online atPokemon.comfor a few hours (click on the Pokemon Diamond & Pearl logo in the middle of the page), before Nintendo took the new info off the website and replaced it back to the old spring 2007 vague release date....
