Sony registers trademarks: ‘Kung Fu Rider,’ ‘The Shoot’

Here’s a quickie as I know nothing about these titles. Honestly, they both sound like silly PSN throwaway games. No offense, Sony. Wait. Come to think of it, I’ve playedThe Shoot. It’s a PlayStation Move game.It was silly. As you’d expect, the entry forKung Fu Ridertells us nothing. The name does not make sense. How do you ride Kung Fu? I’d bet this is a PlayStation Move game too....

Sony: Only a small percentage of PSN cancellations

Sony has revealed that, while some people had terminated their PSN accounts on account of the hacking controversy, it’s only a fraction of those who are keeping the faith. CEO Howard Stringer told the Wall Street Journal that Sony’s customer service only received “a very small percentage” of calls from people wishing to eradicate their PSN accounts. Of course, this doesn’t include those who simply didn’t bother and just traded their systems in....

Spore is getting pirated like crazy: Karma at work?

I don’t usually find piracy easy to justify, but considering that EA has been pig-headed to the extreme over the use of SecuROM in its products — a measure deemed harmful to the enjoyment of the paying consumer — it’s kind ofkarmic to learnthatSpore‘s piracy levels have been deemed “extraordinary” by by one peer-to-peer research firm. Sporehas been at the center of a big DRM controversy, as its piracy-protection program generated a hugeuser backlashon Amazon....

Sundays with Sagat: The Hardcore/Comedy conundrum

[Sundays with Sagat is a video series where a man named Sagat talks to you about videogames. This is serious business.] In this week’s video diary, Sagat takes on the “hardcore games don’t sell on the Wii” misconception, and the problems developers face in trying to make a game that is both “hardcore” and “hilarious”. Sagat meant to talk aboutBrütal Legend(a hardcore/comedy game that failed to sell more than a million copies worldwide per console, despite a huge marketing push and years of hype) instead ofWet(a game that is really more silly than funny), but he couldn’t resist saying the word “wet” over and over again....

Surprise! There’s a creepy girl on Calling’s box art

Whilethe trailer forHudson’sCallinghad an element of camp to it, I’m willing to believe it could provide some creepy moments. After all, you do play as a generally defenseless characters, which always seems to provide more intensity in games than it does it films. That said, I’m not much into the whole J-Horror scene. Never have been, for one reason or another. And this game looksmadJ-Horror. So no, I can’t say thatCallingis especially high up on my radar, and it’s sounding like many of you feel the same way about it....

Swag report: de Blob is de bomb!

[As originally posted onTomopop] As Chad Concelmo likes to say,de Blobis de Bomb. After receiving a copy of the game and the enclosed vinyl toy of de Blob himself (which as far as I know is promo only), I couldn’t agree more. you may look forward to a full review of the Wii title from our own Jonathan Holmes coming soon, but in the meantime I had to seize the opportunity to snap some playful pics of de Blob attempting to tackle a few of my favoriteNendoroids....

TGS 09: Watch us put zombie heads in blenders in Dead Rising 2

Earlier today when we revealedDead Rising 2‘s newmultiplayer mode“Terror is Reality” — including one game where you put blenders on zombie heads — reactions were mixed. Get it!? “Mixed”!? As awesome all of this sounds in words on the Internet, putting blender hats on zombies before chopping and dicing them really must be seen to be fully appreciated. The mini-game, called “Headache,” is part of the larger “Terror is Reality” multiplayer mode we played in Japan today....

TGS: Hidden cam footage of Mega Man Universe

So, I scored 12 minutes of Mega Man Universe footage. Like with the Dream Club Zero footage, it was shot from my shirt pocket, so I apologize if things go out of frame from time to time. I really wasn’t supposed to shoot in there. The weird thing is, the booth companion at the game was all about appearing on camera. She totally knew I was filming, and even posed for the camera a few times....

TGS: The Great Vita Boat Trip

So what did we do? We drank. I drank, Hamza drank and Allistair drank. We ate tempura, sashimi and other goodies, clinked glasses with other journos, and yelled at seagulls. I saw only a couple of Vita games on this boat, including the deliciousUncharted: Golden Abyss, but most of what was there was hands-off. I guess they didn’t want us drunk-fumbling those Vita units into the sea. The boat thing? Rad, except for those seagulls....

The best videogames of 2009 … so far

In addition to the satisfaction of dragging that last bite of delicious popsicle off of its stick and the pride that fills your body after spelling your name with the trail of a sparkler, the summer months also bring about one other inevitable feeling: the emptiness of not having many videogames to play. For some odd reason, publishers like to release all their major games at the beginning and end of the year, leaving the middle, extra sunny months a veritable gaming release ghost town: one filled with movie-licensed tumbleweed and dusty, shovelware saloon doors....
