Tucked away in the back of PAX East was a little game calledDyad. It’s incredibly fun;deep yet simple,meditative yet heart thumping, just like many of my favorite games of this generation. Every level ofDyadthat I played introduced a new gameplay mechanic, but the game never strayed a its simple “move, lock-on, shoot” rhythm that’s so intuitive and gratifying.
Also simple-yet-complex is the story of the man who madeDyad, and the little homemade roller coaster that he made to play it in. I’ve never met anyone quite like Shawn McGrath before. He made this gamebecause he didn’t think Kenta Cho’s classic shmupTorus Trooperwas a good enough game. Thanks to his dissatisfaction, the world is now a better place.
