Recently,Develop sat downwith Black Rock Studios to discuss the company’s latest racing game,Split/Second. The developer, whose most recently released title wasPure, had some very interesting things to say about the current state of the racing genre.

“If you look at the sales figures, the racing genre is in many respects dying out — takeMario Kartout of the equation and the category is in a dire way,” said studio head Tony Beckwith.

“We’re all fans of street racing here, but as a genre it is relatively stale — the evolution is only coming from how you customise cars, which can only serve to remove you from the action — I thinkSplit/Secondwill do the opposite,” game director Nick Baynes said.

I must say, those are some bold words. I truly hope Black Rock can deliver on these promises, but for the time being, I’m going to keep on playingBurnout Paradise, and continue looking forward toNeed for Speed SHIFT.
