Following various retailers shifting the release ofDarkspore, publisher Electronic Arts and developer Maxis has confirmed the delay today. Instead of shipping in late March as originally announced,Darksporewill now hit North America on April 26, and across Europe beginning April 28. That’s the bad news. The good news is that the game, which is currently in a closed beta, will see a wider open beta release in April. “Given the positive response and feedback received over the course of theDarksporeclosed beta, an open beta will be available in April,” an EA spokesperson told us today....

The number of downloads has been upgraded from 2 million to about 3.5 million. Insanity, I tell you! Other crazy-high numbers include: 500 million overall kills , 100 million vehicle kills, 15 million knife kills, 30 million destroyed vehicles, 10 million head shots, and 25 million revives. Personally, I think it’s about as believable a concept as Hideo Kojima one day waking up and saying, “today, I will be clinically sane!” The letter reads like this: Our staff has reviewed the situation and has come to the conclusion that it is not realistic to sustain the original release date....

Capcom has released a teaser trailer for the upcomingResident Evil: Operation Raccoon Citytoday. It’s our first look at the game’s action, which will feature both single-player and four-player cooperative modes. The title’s being developed by the Vancouver-based Slant Six Games, who have previous experience working with Sony on itsSOCOMseries. It’s nice to see some old-schoolResident Evilzombie action in these short clips, with the emphasis being “action.” It certainly seems like the pace of the combat is being taken up a notch versus previous games in the Resident Evil series; nothing says “fun” like drop kicking a zombie to the ground....

Wednesday night I went to a funeral. Well, I wouldn’t exactly call it a funeral. When the deceased in question was, according to long time friend Dave Grossman, “struggling with an inventory item addiction,” it was more farcical than upsetting. After all, when someone tells you to dress up in black for the death ofspoilersGuybrush Threepwood, it’s pretty hard to believe that the guy is really down for the count. And that appears to be the truth....

I used two of the most loved series in the game industry of all time, and the result was just as vicious from both sides as I expected to see. It was a lot of fun to read through everyone’s extra commentary on the additional bonus questions, and it offered a whole lot more insight into what we considered before casting our votes....

I figured you guys could appreciate some savings as much as any other sane person wrapped up in this expensive hobby. Sure, there are a few gems in here, but for the most part, you’re going to get what you pay for....

It’sbeen revealed thatLen Wiseman, ofDie Hard 4andUnderworldfame, will be directing the upcomingGears of Warflick. The film’s target release date was originally summer 2009, but it’s been reported that a delay is likely. Wiseman will be creating a new draft alongside Chris Morgan (Wanted,The Fast and the Furious: Tokyo Drift), with game designer Cliff Bleszinski penned as an executive producer. Looking at Wiseman’s résumé, I think it’s safe to assume that theGears of Warmovie will have plenty of guns, explosions, large men shouting “get to the chopper,” and of course, action, all while looking good visually....
