Nintendo: 3DS had highest first-day sales of any handheld

We don’t have exact sales numbers yet, but Nintendo has said that the first-day sales for their glasses-free portable, the 3DS, has beat that of any other portable in their history. Some questioned the success of the 3DS launch as some systems remained on shelves. Maybe Nintendo has finally figured out how to supply plenty of systems at launch. “Nintendo worked hard to get as much product as possible to retailers on day one to meet demand, and we will continue with these efforts moving forward,” a Nintendo rep said....

As the floating text on the site will tell you, it’s going to be home to Nintendo’s E3 2011 press conference. 9:00 AM PDT is when you will want to be awake on June 7. Okabu: Rolando developer HandCircus’ next big thing

Aug 02, 2025 doesn’t seem like it was that long ago; we’re only talking three years. But when you consider it as the launch date of Apple’s now ubiquitous iOS App Store, it feels like a lifetime. In that same year, London-based independent developer HandCircus was born. “[iOS] seemed like the perfect platform to get started on,” the studios founder, Simon Oliver tells me, “with the unbelievably low barrier to entry and huge opportunities for innovation....

PlayStation Network update: Piyotama and a bunch of trailers

It’s not that we don’t love puzzle games or anything, but today’s PlayStation Network postings for today are incredibly weak compared to this week’s Xbox Live offerings. One new puzzle game and a handful of trailers are not going to hold up to this week’sStrangleholdandEternal Sonatademos… that is, unless you have a thing for fruity flying chickens.Piyotama(‘piyo’ is a Japanese onomatopoeia for bird cheeping, and ‘tama’ is a round object) is a color-matching puzzle game featuring chickens and eggs and Japanese silliness....

Preview: Dyad

Dyadis a self-described “abstract racing game”in developmentfor PlayStation Network. Jonathan previously talked with creator Shawn McGrath aboutDyad‘s inspirations, as well as the surprising reason why — at least initially — the game was made. Recently, I was able to play a handful of levels from this bizarre, beautiful, very promising title. The existence ofDyad(and other games like it) is why I proudly spend so much of my gaming time on digital platforms, where riskier design is embraced....

Preview: The Gunstringer

When I first heard thatThe Gunstringerwas a shoot-’em-up starring a bandito marionette that you controlled with the Kinect, I just went, “Oh, okay.” Because really, how else do you react to that kind of concept? The Gunstringer(Xbox Live Arcade)Developer: Twisted PixelPublisher: Microsoft Game StudiosTo be released: Spring 2011 The game opens with a live-action sequence of people entering a theater with “The Gunstringer” on the marquee in big letters. PSP ObsCure definitely lives up to its name

Do you keep up withObsCure? It’s a co-op survival horror series that has pretty much been ignored for various reasons, most of them relating to the fact that the game is only partly interesting. The entire concept behind co-op survival horror is a bit suspect as is. Isn’t the point to be alone in your suspense (no one bring upRE5or we’re all sitting down for a nice long lecture on what survival horror is)?...

Punk kid hits people with car doors, Grand Theft Auto blamed

You know the drill by now. Some filthy little sh*thead decides to be antisocial and delinquent, then tries to dodge accountability by blaming videogames, something he knows will deflect the blame in the eyes of reactionary, out-of-touch adults. Suchis the caseof Maryland teen Nathan Hartley, who rammed two kids with the door of a speeding car, and is accusingGrand Theft Autoof teaching him how to “door-check.” Naturally, the mainstream press jumped on the story, basically making up “facts” aboutGTA: “In the popular gameGrand Theft Auto, players drive virtual cars and intentionally hit pedestrians by smacking them with open car doors....

Rare responds to fan site’s closure

Earlier this week, we reported that MundoRare has closed its doors forever due to Rare’s corporate bullshit. The fan community had planned to reignite its love for the fallen company by creating a free documentary to be distributed on Xbox Live, but the studio shut down the project for not being “on message.” Today, Rare has officially responded to the closure, in what could be adequately described as a corporately pedestrian statement....
