Review: Gratuitous Space Battles

Usually, most declarations of one game genre or another being “dead” are just hot air. That said, such sentiments are probably closest to truth when applied to space games. Space games are somewhat rare, just a few titles standing out of the pack. Gamers with a lust for giant starship fleets pounding the crap out of each other with shiny beam weapons and screaming missiles are ill-served these days. Thankfully, it seems that Cliff Harris – sole developer at Positech Games – felt that burning desire, much to the benefit of would-be space cadets everywhere....

Ripping out spines in Aliens vs. Predator the ‘money shot’

We’ve all seen by now that the Predator inAliens vs. Predatorcan rip heads off of idiot marines and lovingly stroke the attached spinal chord in a sick trophy kill. Publisher Segalikes doing that. It really, reallylikes doing that … perhaps a bit too much. “It’s got to be the trophy kills on the Predator,” says brand manager Rob Bartholomew, when asked about the game’s signature moment. “… We’re just getting familiar with it again, and getting those trophy kills right where you rip the skull off the marines and pull their spines out afterwards and the Predator kind of caresses the spinal cord and purrs....

Rise of the Argonauts: Not just any old RPG

Codemasters has just sent us an article concerning its intriguing action RPG game,Rise of the Argonauts. This is a title I’ve been looking forward to hearing more about since it was first announced, and we’re pleased to be the first English-speaking site to get you these fresh new details. I’ve been loving the sound of the game’s experience system, which this article explains in a little more detail — rather than traditional experience points, you perform “deeds” throughout the game, such as rescuing certain characters, defeating particularly nasty enemies or escaping from a battle unharmed....

Rocket Knight screenshots are all up in your business

Following yesterday’ssurprise announcementfor a game wetotallyweren’t told about weeks ago, Konami has finally seen fit to share with us some fresh screenshots fromRocket Knight. The retro revival will see Sparkster make a glorious return on XBLA, PSN and Steam, and these new screenshots indicate that the return will be a sexy one. What really stands out for me is are the projectile attacks in this game. The stylistic circles representing smoke and the colored fumes trailing from fireballs and rockets look really beautiful....

Rumor: check out these Fallout Online screens

If you are going to be skeptical about one thing for the rest of the year I’d suggest it is these screens. They’re from aPolish sitewhich claims to have gotten its hands on the paperwork from the wholeBethesda vs. Interplay lawsuit, and some of that paperwork included images from Interplay’s forever in developmentFallout Online, also known as Project V13. The poster claims that these screens and artwork were sent into the court as proof that Interplay had been hard at work at making an MMORPG ofFalloutand thus Bethesda has no right to sue Interplay over their lack of development on the game....

Rumortoid: DSi to get Gameboy, GBA downloads

Remember when Microsoft stopped providing updates to the Xbox 360 that allowed it to play old Xbox games, then “coincidentally” launched its downloadable Xbox Classics? It’s an obvious trick, but it’s one that works, and if this rumor is to be believed, Nintendo hopes to emulate the scam with its own “classics” scheme. As we all know, the DSi cannot play Gameboy or Gameboy Advance games, due to the fact that the cartridge slot was removed....

Rumortoid: MGS 4 pre-order bots responsible for Amazon downtime

Today was quite possibly the worst day for Amazon to experience downtime. Planned to be the day that Amazon began accepting pre-orders for theMetal Gear Solid 480 GB PS3 bundle, everything fell apart when Amazon experienced some serious downtime this morning — downtime that many are attributing to the popularity of theMGS 4bundle and subsequent flood of pre-order traffic. While technically true, rumorhas it that the downtime is actually attributable to several bots set up prior to pre-order availability with the sole purpose of pre-ordering every bundle they possibly could, presumably to resell the bundles at inflated prices on eBay....

SDCC: New Marvel Super Hero Squad game announced

THQ has announced that its releasing yet another title based on the popularMarvel Super Hero Squadcartoon, this time bringing the game to the Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3, as well as the Wii and the Nintendo DS. CalledMarvel Super Heroes: The Infinity Gauntlet, it’s a third-person action title that has players controlling the adorable wee-versions of their favorite Marvel heroes as they try to thwart Doctor Doom’s Lethal Legion. It seems like the game will be quite similar to the Wii title, a simple (but mostly fun, I thought) third-person beat ’em up, but this time around, THQ has added a new co-op Challenge mode....
