Okamiden producer: Not a sequel, a ‘spiritual successor’

With Clover studios having disbanded, some thought they’d never see a proper follow up to its 2006 PlayStation 2 classic,Ōkami.Ōkamiden, Capcom’s upcoming Nintendo DS title set in theŌkamiuniverse, may just be what gamers had been hoping for. Just don’t go calling it as sequel. “I should clarify for you that I don’t consider it a sequel so much as a spiritual successor,”Ōkamidenproducer Motoshide Eshiro tells me via a translator. Eshiro explains that there’sŌkami, which was on the PlayStation 2 and the Wii, and then there’s the upcomingŌkamiden— he’d like to keep the “brands” separate....

PETA is taking the fight against Canadianseal slaughterersto the digital plains ofWorld of Warcraft. A call to arms was placed on PETA’sofficial blogthis afternoon, asking people to take part in a fight against four Horde miscreants that apparently, uh, kill seals for their luxurious fur. “Thrall refused to ban the slaughter of seals, despite multiple requests from the Alliance to do so, because Orgrimmar stands to make a large profit from the fur,” reads the posting....

Play videogames or study for the SAT, now you can do both

Did I study rigorously for the ACT when I was in high school?Hell no. I was far too busy leveling up my party in the.hack//series to read through some boring test prep booklet. Yeah, it probably hurt my score somewhat, but the siren song of videogames was just far too strong for me to ignore. Also, I tend to just hate studying in general. Ifyouhappen to enjoy studying as much as you like playing videogames, and need to take the SAT at some near point in the near future, then Aspyr Media’sfutureUmight be something to look into....

PlayStation 3 is finally profitable

Sony has boasted that, after four years of bleeding money, the PlayStation 3 has become profitable, with the company finally making money on every unit sold. With that in mind, don’t expect any new price cuts for the time being. “This year is the first time that we are able to cover the cost of the PlayStation 3,” says Sony Worldwide Studios boss Shuhei Yoshida. “We aren’t making huge money from hardware, but we aren’t bleeding like we used to....

Podtoid 124 is tonight, will kick it with DJ Jazzy Jeff

Podtoid is Destructoid.com’s official podcast. This is the best YouTube video I’ve seen all year. Tonight, the Podtoid crew will discuss piracy,Modern Warfare 2, BioWare story structure, and other things. And if we don’t find a way to mute Adam Dork, we’ll probably talk aboutJurassic: The Hunted‘s raptor-punching QTE’s. As is typically the case, we need listener questions. As is typically the case, you will provide them. A simple arrangement, I should think....

Preview: LocoRoco: Midnight Carnival

It’s that song. I don’t know if you know, but the main theme song from the originalLocoRocowas so damn infectious I had to download it immediately. Then I found out it was sung by some little kid, and then I felt creepy. Children’s music is usually like that. So I have to say I have a funny relationship withLocoRoco. See, it’s so saccharine and cute that I feel “off” after a just a few hours of play....

Raven Software, the group behindSingularity, is sticking with the shooter genre for its next title — ifa recent job listingis any indication, that is. In a post for a lead FX artist on Gamasutra, “an established console-based, realistic, first-person military shooter” is specifically mentioned. They also go out of their way to call it a “new unannounced title,” so take that for what you will. Lately, there have been a few rumors about what the studio is working on next....
