Classic Atari 2600 game Haunted House getting 3D update

The Atari 2600 classicHaunted Houseis getting the makeover treatment, Atari has announced today. The title is being “re-imagined” for Wii, Xbox LIVE Arcade, and PC download. The title isn’t a direct port or really an upgrade, instead a 3D title that “pays homage” to the classic. It’s also a bit of a sequel — gamers play as the grandchildren of the original characters who were lost in the early-80s title, exploring the Graves Mansion and fending off otherworldly baddies....

Codemasters’ CEO thinks the PS3 can set a new trend

Sony has said all along that the words “future proof” were etched into the PlayStation 3’s master plan from the onset, and judging by the complexity of the hardware, that case can certainly be argued. If you think that it will be enough to extend the competitive life of the console to around 10 years or so, well then, you are in good company. Speaking to Next-Gen, Codemasters’ CEO Rod Cousens echoed that sentiment:...

Cop killer appeals death sentence by blaming videogames

A criminal always blames something else for its own pathetic actions, and there are always people willing to help them do that. Such is the case that cop killer Devin Moore hasappealed a death sentenceby blaming his killing spree in the Fayette police station on childhood abuse andGrand Theft Auto. Such a typical and despicable tactic is offensive not only to gamers but to victims of childhood abuse who actually worked through it to become decent human beings, but the saddest part about Moore’s buck-passing is that a gaggle of morons are bound to lap it up and give credence to this scumbag’s attempts to shed accountability....

Custer’s Revenge used to attack videogames: Wait, what!?

I’ve heard some pretty ridiculousness nonsense from people attempting to paint videogames in a bad light, but this is definitely in the top ten. Award-winning author Tom Keenanhas decided to useCuster’s Revenge, a 26-year old videogame, to talk about modern day gaming issues. Both British MP Keith Vaz and a Mayor of Boston aide have attempted to convince people that videogames allow players to virtually rape women (Vaz saying these games were on the PSP “or whatever it’s called”), and it seems that someone has finally found a title to support these wild claims — by digging back two decades and then some:...

Darksiders IIis aiming to be a deeper experience, with NPC interaction and a detailed loot system. The observant among you will note that Death looks like atotal badass, and that this is awesome news....

Denis Dyack: I’m like, soooo controversial, man … radical

The infamous president of Silicon Knights, Denis Dyack, has been courting controversy for a while, ever since his first temper tantrum overToo Human. He’s blamed everyone and everything for his upcoming game’s failings, sued Epic, and placed bets with NeoGAF forum members. Is he controversial? We can think of a few other C-words to describe him (kidding, Mr. Dyack, sir). “I’ve been told that I’m controversial so often, I guess it’s true,” Dyackhas stated, with what one can only assume was a smug air of faux nonchalance....

Digital Distribution: The death of retro gaming

[For our first promoted blog for last week’s Digital Distribution topic, pedrovay2003 breaks down, by platform, the reasons he isn’t a fan of non-physical media. Want to see your own blog on the front page? Write a blog for this week’s current topic, Downloadables! — JRo] I haven’t been shy about showing my feelings for digital distribution on Destructoid. I think that most of the time, it sucks. Digital distribution is killing gaming, and people don’t — and probablywon’t— realize that for a long time....

Dota 2 footage from gamescom tournament

One of the big things that’s happening at gamescom right now, aside from all the announcements, is theDota 2tournament being run by Valve. It’s also the first chance gamers have to get a glimpse of the game in action, whilst it’s being played by some top teams for the chance at the $1 million first-place prize. The whole tournament kicked off today with the group stage, with some matches being streamed from theDota 2website but one crafty player recorded part of the setup stage of his match and some early footage of the actual game....

Driver: San Francisco slides into 2011

During its first quarter 2010-11 earnings call, Ubisoft brought some sensible news:Driver: San Franciscois being pushed back into early 2011. Citing the “competitive market at Christmas” as the reason for the delay, the game is now on track for release between January and March. Really, it makes a lot of sense. Maybe I’m out of line here, but it doesn’t seem likeDriverhas the same pull as many of the November- and December-bound sequels to popular franchises that’ll be hitting around its (now old) launch date....
