Happy 20th Birthday to Street Fighter II: World Warrior

Street Fighter II: World Warrior. Damn. What a classic. I can’t tell you how many times I’ve played this amazing game, which dates back to 1991. 20 years, baby. To celebrate, I’ve borrowedShoryuken‘s idea. Let’s remember this game fondly in the comments below. Here’s my contribution: I got on this kick back in the day where I was obsessed with the game. I knew I wasn’t good at it, but I wanted to be, so much so that I’d challenge anyone who claimed to be good....

HBO Go coming to home consoles

HBO Go’s increasingly popular service is soon to follow Netflix, providing its “TV anywhere” entertainment on home consoles. The service has done pretty damn well in its current incarnations, with the mobile app for iOS and Android having been downloaded more than four million times. Time Warner CEO Jeff Bewkes confirmed that his company is hoping to expand on that success with game systems and smart TVs. You areallexcited about this, because you loveTrue Blood....

Here’s your Battlefield 3 pre-order DLC

Battlefield 3looks like it’s going to be a hit for Electronic Arts, with the publisher saying that pre-order numbers are up more than ten times that ofBattlefield: Bad Company 2. So that’s good news, but it wants more pre-orders. And how do you get people to pre-order? Well, first you offer them a “Limited Edition,” which everyone who pre-orders the game will be “upgraded” to. It features the “Back to Karkand” downloadable contentwe previously told you about....

Hop, hop, splat: Frogger Returns on DSiWare

There was a lot going on at Konami’s gamer night andwe’ve told you aboutmost of the really interesting stuff. Now it’s time to fill you in on the “not as interesting, but maybe someone wants to know about it” stuff. In this post’s case that stuff isFrogger Returnsfor the DSiWare. Most likely this is a downgraded version of the horrible gamethat landedon WiiWare and PSN as it too features a new view, 3Dier graphics and new power-ups for the intrepid hopping frog who always seems to find himself on the wrong side of the damn road....

I, the Author: How I stole the Declaration of Independence

[It’s time for anotherMonthly Musing— the monthly community blog theme that provides readers with a chance to get their articles and discussions printed on the frontpage. — CTZ] I never thought I’d meet Button Gwinett, the second signer of the Declaration of Independence. But, there he was, standing in the basement of the National Archives. Or, at least the robot programmed to impersonate him for tours and historic posterity. He was no more than a witty sideshow for tourists and educators passing through DC to get a glimpse of our nation’s history....

Indie developers to lead the charge?

I just came across this really interesting write-up onGamesIndustry.biz, about how the gaming industry may very well be seeing Indie developers being the trend setters for future “next-gen” content. In an interview with GI, Freestyle Games commercial director, Chris Lee, said he believed that, “tightly knit teams have the advantage over mammoth development studios.” “I don’t see any reason why a really talented group of people who are ultra-focused with a very efficient tool chain couldn’t deliver a triple-A product with a team of 30 people....

Indie Nation #33: Mega Man 7, the 8-bit version

It’s been a veryMega Man-filled week, and don’t expect it to stop anytime soon. I’ve hopefully got a Rockman-related video coming next week, and, before writinghis review ofMega Man 9, our own Jonathan Holmes alerted me to what eventually became this week’s highlighted Indie Nation. Mega Man 7, originally released for the SNES, was rather hit-or-miss. On the one hand, the level design was reasonably solid; on the other hand, the (admittedly gorgeous) sprites were simply far too big, making the game a cluttered and — to use Jon’s words — “claustrophobic” affair....

iOS dev: Nintendo’s on the wrong side of portable history

History is written by the victors, and according to Appy CEO Chris Ulm, Nintendo can hand its pen over to the superior side of the battle. “I have enormous respect for Nintendo, but I think they might be on the wrong side of history,” said Ulm. “Talking about how they’re not going to do free games or mobile games; they have their walled garden of established IP and that’s great, but if kids are interested in iOS … they’re going to lose their business....

Is NIS America hinting at a US Disgaea 3 release?

Is the above pictured greeting card a sort of hint thatDisgaea 3is coming to the US?Siliconeraseems to think so. This poor guy Japanese was getting overwhelmed with email, and it wasn’t even his fault. His address was attached to money making accounts that were expected to be banned instantly, and his inbox was seeing the aftermath. Tired of the mail, this guy, who has never playedFinal Fantasy XI, contacted Square Enix to put a stop to it all....

Kula fills out the full King of Fighters XIII roster

King of Fighters XIIis not the best 2D fighter available on current-gen consoles, but it’s still one of my favorites. It just looks so good. To a dyed-in-the-wool fan of 2D fighters,KoF XIIis the only game in recent years to truly look right. It doesn’t look like a CGI animated imitation of a 2D fighter, or an anime imitation of a 2D fighter. It looks like the real deal, and I love that....
