Apparently, Microsoft has already begun shipping the newly configured Xbox 360s for retail with a quieter DVD drive, called the “BenQ VAD6038 drive.” And allegedly, this new drive means that 360 owners now don’t have to hear an airplane take off each time they start up a game ofGears of Waror whatever else it is people play on their 360. FromXbox-Scene: GaryOPA mailed in to let us know Microsoft has finally started using the new BenQ VAD6038 drive for the Xmas’06 production run (MFR date November 06 and up) to replace the Toshiba-Samsung and Hitachi-LG drives Microsoft dropped....

The folks atGametrailershave posted a few gameplay videos of the upcomingSilent Hill 5, all of which are just long enough to just barely tease those who are desperately searching for more details.The Collective (the developers that Konami chose to take over the series) said that they wanted to include the wall-melting transformation sequence from the recentSilent Hilltheatrical release, and judging from the above video, it looks like they nailed it. My only issue is with the siren noise, as it was more cute than scary; it sounded like something that would be mounted on a kid’s toy....

Hot off its failed attempt to acquire Tecmo, Final Fantasy publisher Square Enix seems determined to be the Japanese EA and get some companies under its belt. It would appear that the companyis now afterBritish publisher Eidos, despite Warner Brothers being the most likely candidate for the job. MCV claims that both WB and Squeenix are about to mount rival bids for the house of Tomb Raider. With WB already owning 20% of the company, and recently permitted to buy more shares, Square would have a bit of trouble wresting control....

Two of Koei Tecmo’s bigger original IPs have been delayed, with not even an estimated launch date given. BothQuantum TheoryandTrinity: Souls of Zill O’llhave been pushed back from their original release dates and given “TBA” status. That kind of doesn’t look too good. Originally announced for the Xbox 360 and PS3 for March 25,Quantum Theoryhas been delayed for reasons of quality control. This might mean the studio just wants it polished, or it could mean the game’s current condition is dogcrap....

Telltale Games has let loose a couple new screenshots forJurassic Park The Game, showing off some of the enemy dinosaurs that will hunt the game’s characters. Not too many new details on the game were revealed at gamescom but Telltale does assure us that there will be more to be seen at PAX, so let’s see what’s in store there. I’ve heard good things aboutBack to the Future: The Gameand happen to be a fan of both theJurassic Parkbook and movie, sodespite the delayI’m keeping my hopes up for this one....

A three-pack of Fall Out Boy songs is slated to hitRock Band 3DLC beginning August 16. You could almost guess what three songs will be in this pack. “Sugar, We’re Going Down,” “Dance, Dance” and the vowel-lacking “Thnks fr th Mmrs” are all included in Fall Out Boy Pack 01. The pack costs $5.49 (440 Microsoft Points, 550 Wii Points) or $1.99 per song. Deep Purple also has a single coming for the same date, August 16....
