Design a Dark Souls shield to cower behind

IfDark Soulsis anything likeDemon’s Souls(spoiler: it’s alotlikeDemon’s Souls), you’ll probably spend a lot of time cringing behind a shield, a flimsy piece of metal the only thing between you and untold horrors waiting (or actively trying) to mutilate and consume your flesh. May as well make that flimsy piece of metal look pretty, right? To that end, From Software have given fans the opportunity tocome up with a suitably impressive designthat will be plastered onto a shield in the final game....

Destructoid’s games of the week for 01/14/07: United Kingdom edition!

Ladies and gentlemen, my name is Nex, and today we will be learning about one of the most historic countries on Earth: the United Kingdom! The United Kingdom (or UK as it’s commonly known to those who fear syllables) was originally a rocky outcropping of land in the sea north of France inhabited only by wolves andVikings. Eventually, though, the diminutive, pale mole people who lived under the island decided they would like to bask in the sun’s rays as well and they drove off the Vikings and wolves with complex mathematics and their sharp, malformed teeth....

Digital Distribution: Resistance is useless

[Today’s promoted blog from last week’s Digital Distribution topic comes from mean cheez, who highlights three major positives he sees to non-physical media. Want to see your own blog on the front page? Write a blog for this week’s current topic,Downloadables! — JRo] How much has digital distribution influenced the way I play games? I just built a new computer two weeks ago. It’s been a long time coming—my old rig was about five years old, with a bottomed out video card I had to pick up to replace a broken one when I was low on cash....

Dynasty Warriors 7 story screens story screens thing yes

Here’s a fresh batch ofDynasty Warriors 7, for you cannot have too many. This set of images shows off the game’s Story Mode, in which characters will take part in a series of battles based around the Three Kingdoms era of ancient China. Omega Force says it’s aiming for a more faithful recreation of the classic story this time around, though I’m sure the old texts say nothing aboutbodyslamming ladies in order to see their underwear....

E3: Captain America: Super Soldier has potential

Seriously, don’t blow off what I’m about to say. Yes,Thorwas horrible. Just a waste of space. I don’t know what the hell Sega was thinking letting the game through in the state that it was. This isn’t aboutThor, though. This is about theCaptain Americavideogame and how it actually has promise. I only played about ten minutes of the game, and it may be because I had little expectations going in, but I was really impressed by the game — especially with the fighting system....

E3: Minecraft announced for Xbox 360 with Kinect support

Arguably the most successful game which has yet to actually be finished, the world-building PC titleMinecraftis heading to Xbox 360. Coming this fall, the title will be a console exclusive for Microsoft and make use of their Kinect motion control system. I’m all forMinecraftmaking its way out to devices beyond the PC but using motion controls in it? That sounds uncomfortable. But so does playingMinecraftwith a controller. I have no doubt that the latter will wind up being perfectly acceptable but I’m going to need to see something really compelling on the Kinect front to take that seriously at all....

EA boss doesn’t think Treyarch is all that great

Treyarch may be sitting pretty atop yet anotherCall of Dutysuccess, but Electronic Arts CEO John Riccitiello has dismissed the studio’s ability to craft a breakout FPS title and step out from under Infinity Ward’s shadow. “I don’t know that having two guys that probably don’t play the games, in the form of the CEO of Vivendi and the CEO of Activision, come out and say ‘Treyarch is our lead developer,’ like you could anoint that,” says the silver-haired Lothario....

EpicWin: Quite possibly the best ‘to-do list’ ever

Apologies for the weirdness of that headline —EpicWin, an upcoming iPhone “game” byRexboxandMrFungFung, isn’t easily classified. Actually, they’re calling it a “productivity app,” which works pretty well. Whatever. The character limit was being a harsh mistress again. I’m one-hundred percent sure this concept of turning real-life tasks into a game has been tried before, but to my knowledge, it’s never been done in such an aesthetically pleasing way. More to that point,EpicWinbeing an iPhone app makes it all the more viable....
