TGS 08: We’re playing RPG now! Hands-on with 7th Dragon

I will never get tired of Sega’s “We’re making RPG now,” announcement of7th Dragon. It certainly helped the title remain planted within my mind, so I was more than happy to try it out at the Tokyo Game Show, despite the language barrier. Well, the main reason I checked it out was because Sega’s DS rooms all had seats, and I was a very tired person. That was reason enough to pretend I know Japanese and attempt to play an RPG....

TGS 2007: Capcom goes mobile with BioHazard 4 and Devil May Cry

While I’d guess that theBiohazard 4andDevil May Cry: Dante/Virgilmobile titles weren’t the result of a public outcry or an Internet petition, far be it from me to speak on the demand of cellular phone-based games in Japan. As a foreigner, I’m not only astounded by the number of cell phones used throughout Tokyo, but I was also stunned to find out that mobile games made up the highest percentage of titles shown at this year’s Tokyo Game Show....

TGS 2007: Soul Calibur IV trailer wants to soul your caliburs

So many trailers are coming out of the Tokyo Game Show that I am beginning to wish I was dead. Until that relief comes to me, however, have another video, this time from Bandai Namco and showing offSoul Calibur IV. Though not a big fan of one-on-one fighting games, due to the fact I am absolutely terrible at them, I have to say that this is looking like one of the most gorgeous games in all of creation....

The seven best videogame manuals of all time

Growing up, birthdays and Christmases were about the only times I would ever get new games. I was always excited to play them right away, but when you’re a kid, you have to at least feign courteousness and wait for everyone else to open their gifts and visit a while before holing up in your room with your Sega Genesis. At least, that’s how my Christmases always worked. Anyway, to keep myself sane through the wait, I would thoroughly go over the supplemental material that came along with the games I got....

There’s some classic Final Fantasy on my App Store

Square Enix stealth-dropped the first twoFinal Fantasygames,Final Fantasy 1andFinal Fantasy 2, onto the App Store earlier Thursday morning at a less-than-thrifty $8.99 price point. Both are looking as good as the more recent ports, but we’re not too sure how the translation to touchscreen fares. We still haven’t put our fingers on these mini versions of the classic RPGs. So we’ll crowd source for the moment. Is battle navigation as difficult as one would assume?...

This week’s Steam freebie is Lead and Gold

Lead and Gold: Gangs of the Wild Westis one of those games you hear nothing but pleasant things about, yet you’re always too “busy” to try out. Now we have no excuse, as Fatshark’s team-centric multiplayer western is a free download for the weekend. Beyond that, the game is temporarily $7.49(half off). Some people like to write stuff like this off as aTeam Fortress 2clone. Remember when — before “first-person shooter” was used — everyone called those games “Doom-like”?...

Trailer for Lord of the Ri–er, I mean, The Legend of Spyro: Dawn of the Dragon

The first time I heard ofThe Legend of Spyro: Dawn of the Dragonwas throughHamza’s impressionsof the game from Sierra’s Spring Event way back in April. Ever since then, it’s been one ofmy most anticipated releases of the year. LikeChad(see “PlayStation Games” in profile sidebar), I’ve been a huge fan of theSpyroseries ever since its debut on the PS1. And while most of the games after the original trilogy have been mediocre, this game — the conclusion to theLegend of Spyrotrilogy — looks like it could renew my faith in the franchise....

UK games event highlights: VGL, London festival, GameCity and more. Also, NARP

Not a lot happens in the UK for gamers during much of the year, but if there’s one thing I’ll give this country, it’s that it at leasttries. The London Games Festival wasn’t all that special last year, but they did their best and they’re doing their best again this year. As we plough through October, there are quite a few British events going on for UK gamers, so I figured I’d post a selection of the stuff you may attend....
