Chiptunes in the streets of Seattle at PAX 09

[Editor’s note: Our resident Chiptunes expert, Zen Albatross, checked out Lo-Tek Resistance while at PAX 09. — CTZ] Videogames are cool and all, but one of the major highlights of my weekend at PAX was Lo-Tek Resistance, the impromptu street performance engineered by members of Crunchy Co Records. Anyone near the front entrance of the Washington State Convention Center on Friday was treated to three amazing hours of Game Boy-powered jams from almost a dozen performers including Fighter X, Seanbad, Circles, Spamtron, Infradead, McFiredrill and even Anamanaguchi’s Ary Warnaar....

I always meant to try playing1 Vs. 100on Xbox Live, but I never got around to it. Too late now, I guess. It was rumored to be ending, but now Microsoft confirms that the plug has been pulled on the virtual game show. There will be no third season. “When we started on this journey, we knew we were creating an entirely new genre of entertainment that would be a continually evolving concept,” said Dave McCarthy, General Manager, Microsoft Game Studios....

Curable diseases are for wimps: new Eternal Sonata images

Namco Bandai has released some new screenshots ofEternal Sonata, their forthcoming Xbox 360 RPG. Known asTrustyBellin Japan (where it will be released this June), the game is being developed by tri-Crescendo, the same team that brought you the GameCubeBaten Kaitostitles. What’s interesting about the game (besides the fact that it looks ridiculously cool), is that it features a musical based battle system. What the hell does that mean? You’ve got me, but I like music and I like battles, so we’re all set....

DBZ: Ultimate Tenkaichi allows you to Frankenstein a hero

In myprevious postaboutDragon Ball Z: Ultimate Tenkaichi, I suggested that new game-exclusive characters needed to be introduced to spice up the franchise. I suppose Spike and Namco Bandai were listening, but since they are too lazy to do any real work towards that goal, it’ll be up to us to get the job done. To that end,Ultimate Tenkaichiwill offer character creation. In the game’s Hero Mode, you can slap together various body parts to assemble your ownDBZreject....

Dead Island’s box art can leave you hanging

TheDead Islandforums revealed the game’s box art today, with anormal versionfor most of the countries that traded slaves in the colonial era and acensored versionfor the region they were headed to. Makes sense, no? I never saw a problem with the logo, as the game’s fictional island has tourists of all colors as well as an indigenous population. A more valid complaint would be that it makes no sense to hang a zombie from a tree by its neck....

Destructoid Review: Culdcept Saga

I’ll say right away that partaking in the nerdy delights of OmiyaSoft’sCuldcept Sagais a real pleasure for those that are used to the complex rules of trading card games, though it’s definitely not for everyone. Its gameplay, a funky blend of card games likeMagic: The Gatheringand board games likeMonopoly, requires plenty of reading, learning, and and considerable patience. While there’s plenty here for those that want to use their brains,Culdcept Sagawill do absolutely nothing for your trigger finger....

Doing it right: How to use DS features properly

As someone who travels a lot, and who until recently had a job that involved plenty of boring, unsupervised office hours, portable videogames have become my bread and butter. I spend a lot of time with my PSP and DS, likely a lot more than I do with home consoles. Having invested so many hours into them, I like to think I know a little bit about what makes a fun handheld game....

E3 09: Hands-on with Sin & Punishment 2

As busy as I am here at E3, I am not complaining one bit. In fact, as I play one amazing game after another I can only feel grateful that I am even able to do something this cool to begin with. Never was this more apparent then during my playthrough of Treasure’s upcoming Wii sequelSin & Punishment 2. I don’t know what it was, but there was something about playing this game that just put a huge smile on my face and made me realize thatI love playing freakin’ videogames....

E3 10: Activision says Modern Warfare 2 has sold a ton

In an announcement that surprised virtually no one, earlier today Activision Blizzard told a group of analysts thatModern Warfare 2recently broke 20 million copies sold. To put that in perspective, that’s about 4 copies for every person in Scotland, two copies for every person in Los Angeles, or a copy for almost every single person on the continent of Australia. The craziest part of all this is that, taking into account all the money Activision Blizzard made offCall of Duty, the Wall Street Journal reportsthatWorld of Warcraftstill makes up 70% of Activision Blizzard’s operating profit....

Those pesky analysts are at it again, and this time, the slippery release date ofSporeis taking it on the chin. FPSBrain XB200 Liquid is a drink for gamers, also German

When did energy drinks become a cultural thing? A few days ago in Germany, FPS Brain XB200 Liquid was revealed to the videogame masses, eager for an edge. The drink is being touted as the “world’s strongest energy drink” and we’re being told it “drastically prolongs the onset of gamer’s fatigue.” The drink is made from guarana, and apparently a ton of it as the press release clearly states that the recommended daily intake is “half a vial....
